Why Colon Hydrotherapy Is Preferable To Laxatives
Colonoscopies play a critical role in the early detection of conditions such as colon cancer. In fact, nine out of ten people with the disease can be cured if they receive early warning, leading to early treatment.
In the preparation for a colonoscopy, it’s important that the large intestine be cleared of waste matter, and one strategy has been the use of prescription laxatives to this end. But that is not usually the best approach.
What Is Colon Hydrotherapy?
Colon Hydrotherapy is a safe, simple and healthier way to remove waste from the large intestine (colon). It is performed by a licensed therapist in a medical practice setting. The therapy takes about 45-60 minutes, during which time the patient lies in a comfortable position in a bed, watching television or listening to music. After the therapy, the patient may resume their regular daily activities, feeling more energized and prepared for the colonoscopy.
Diverse Medical Care Does Not Recommend Laxatives.
When using laxatives to prepare for a colonoscopy, the patient requires a prescription laxative, which usually does not taste very good. Along with drinking the laxative, the patient must also drink a large amount of fluids.
Typically, the patient starts to drink the laxative in the early evening, prior to the colonoscopy. With the laxative, the patient often experiences side effects such as abdominal cramping and nausea. Once the laxative begins to work, the patient will have several hours of running to the bathroom to release bowel movements.
Patients typically do not get much rest the night before the colonoscopy, leaving them feeling tired and dehydrated the next day. Patients with hemorrhoids will often experience a flare-up, with rectal pain due to the frequent bowel movements.
